The Madeira Islands
Madeira, discovered around 1418 is an autonomous region of Portugal, located in the North Atlantic Ocean, about 1,000 km (620 miles) from Lisbon and a little less than 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of Tenerife. The archipelago is one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal (the other being the Azores located to the northwest), and includes the islands of Madeira, Porto Santo and Desertas, administered together with the separate archipelago of the Ilhas Selvagens. Consisting of seismic origin of mountain peaks rising from the ocean abyssal bottom of the oceanic depth of 5000 meters to its highest central massif 1861 meters (Pico Ruivo). Madeira is famous for its high cliffs, including Cabo Girão, the second largest in the world and the coast of the island and tricky terrain creating several microclimate zones. Southern Wood is warm, sunny and dry with an average annual temperature of 18 ° C. The north receives heavy rainfall (up to 200 cm per year) and works as a watershed because of an intricate water control system (levadas and other systems) dating to the 16th century. Madeira is also the outermost region of the European Union and is the largest and most important island of the archipelago.
The neighboring island of Porto Santo is known as the "Golden Island". It is much smaller than Madeira and has a very different relation to its topography - the land is flatter and vegetation is scarce, so a drier climate than in Madeira. Its main attraction is its beautiful stretch of 9 km (5 miles) of golden sandy beach.
Funchal, Madeira's capital, has a population of about 100,000 inhabitants. From its natural harbor, this seductive and cosmopolitan city literally covers the slopes of an ancient volcano, with many of its narrow streets that resemble those in Venice, Italy.
